Belize seems to appear on every travel list
A recent article published by CTV News highlighted Belize as a top “off the beaten path” destination for 2017. The article declared that Latin America is set to be a key travel trend for 2017, noting that Belize has plenty to offer travelers looking for a “walk on the wild side.”
The CTV News report identified some of Belize’s top attractions, including the ancient Maya ruins at Xunantunich in the country’s western Cayo District near its border with Guatemala. Noting a lack of tourism infrastructure in the pristine west, the CTV News report highlighted the fact that visitors traveling to the ancient Maya ruins in Belize can capture breathtaking views and emblematic photos. Xunantunich is the oldest continuously excavated Maya site in the country, but in the summer of 2016, a dig at the site’s central structure uncovered the largest Maya royal tomb ever discovered, yielding important clues about the civilization’s history.
The CTV News report also recommended a visit to the Belize Zoo. Originally founded in the 1980s as a rescue shelter for animals abandoned after the shooting of nature documentaries, the Belize Zoo has blossomed into the country’s premier wildlife educational center. Belize’s first handicap-accessible facility, the Belize Zoo is home to hundreds of indigenous species, including jaguars, eagles, and tapirs.
Another top attraction in Belize highlighted in the CTV News report was the Great Blue Hole, sometimes known as the Belize Blue Hole. A nearly perfectly circular body of sapphire water nestled in the arms of Lighthouse Atoll, the Belize Blue Hole was rated as a top 10 dive site by the famed French marine biologist and documentarian Jacques Cousteau.
Other destinations highlighted by the CTV News report include the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, used by ancient Maya priests to conduct human sacrifices, hiking through the jungle, river trekking, relaxing on the beach on the Placencia Peninsula, touring the municipal market in Belmopan, and sampling the seafood in Corozal Town.
