Southwest Denver-Belize flights take off

Traveller’s in the United States now have even more access to Belize, thanks to Southwest Airlines’ new direct flights from Denver, Colorado to Belize.

Southwest is offering the only Colorado-Belize service, which had its inaugural flight on Saturday March 11. A total of 143 passengers travelled to Belize on the inaugural flight. As a memento, all inbound and outbound passengers were given souvenirs in honor of the occasion.

The new flight will operate twice a year, making weekly flights on Saturdays, between the periods March 11th 2017 to April 24th 2017. In its second phase, the flight will operate twice weekly, on Saturdays and Sundays from June 4th through August 14th, 2017.

To commemorate the event, Southwest and the Government of Belize held two separate ceremonies: the first at Denver International Airport, and the other at the Phillip Goldson International Airport in Belize.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jason Van Eaton, Vice President of Governmental Affairs at Southwest Airlines, described the occasion as an “exciting day” for Southwest, and it’s growing operation in Denver International Airport.

“We are pleased not only to offer our Customers the only nonstop service between Denver International and Belize City, Belize, but also grow our international footprint while connecting our customers with more destinations that are important to them.”

In Belize, the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Manuel Heredia Jr., expressed his appreciation for Southwest, for believing in Belize as a tourism destination.

“Southwest Airlines continues to show its commitment to Belize by creating additional routes to Belize making us more accessible to US travelers.” Heredia said.

Chief Tourism Officer in the Ministry,  Abil Castaneda, explained that the new flight added to the existing partnership between Belize and Southwest.

“As we speak, the first direct flight from Denver to Belize is on its way, and in a few minutes the first reciprocal flight Belize to Denver will be departing our shores.” Castaneda said.

There were a total of 120 passengers that departed on the flight from Belize to Denver. According to Southwest, demand for a direct flight to Belize had been growing, with 13,000 people traveling from Denver to Belize last year – a 50 percent increase since 2013.

This launch of the new flight marks Southwest’s second connection to Belize, Houston and Denver.  Both Texas and Colorado are top destinations in the US for arrivals to Belize, thereby highlighting the importance of this new flight for our tourism Industry.
