In 2019, the village of Placencia will host the 16th annual Sidewalk Art Festival. Running from 9:30 am on Saturday, February 9, 2019, through the following day, Sunday, February 10, 2019, the Sidewalk Art Festival will celebrate the music, food, art, and cultural heritage of the Placencia Peninsula.
Placencia Village currently holds the Guinness Book of World Records spot for the world’s smallest main street, a 1,097-foot-long pedestrian only sidewalk that measures just four feet across. During the festival, the village’s main sidewalk turns into a carnival of music, food stalls, games, vendors, and booths selling wood carvings, sculpture, handicrafts, paintings, photographs, clothing, and handmade furniture. There is plenty of fun and excitement for the whole family to enjoy during the Sidewalk Art Festival, including poetry readings, live music, face painting, and games.
The village of Placencia is located at the southern tip of the Placencia Peninsula in Belize’s southeastern Stann Creek District. Measuring 16 miles from north to south, the Placencia Peninsula lies on the Caribbean coastline and is conveniently positioned close to many of the top attractions on the Belize Barrier Reef, including the Laughing Bird Caye National Park and other world-class areas for snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, and fishing.
A quiet fishing village with just over 1,000 inhabitants, Placencia Village has slowly begun to evolve into the entertainment hub of the peninsula, home to outstanding restaurants, quirky cafes, and dive shops. Nearby mainland attractions include the Garifuna cultural centers such as the town of Dangriga and the villages of Seine Bight and Hopkins, the enormous Cockscomb Basin Nature Reserve (home to some of the last surviving jaguars in the region), and boat expeditions along the course of the Monkey River.
