Summer, A Great Time To Visit Belize
Summer is one of the best times to visit Belize. With fantastic weather (mid to low-80s), great deals on flights, and lots of exciting activities, there’s plenty on offer for everyone in Belize.
Here are just a few of the many exciting things to see and do in Belize on your summer vacation:
Lobsterfest
If you love lobster, you’ll be in good company during the annual Lobsterfest held in Placencia. Local fishermen celebrate the opening of the lobster season in June with a huge three-day party on the Placencia Peninsula where local chefs vie to create the tastiest and most innovative lobster dish. Along with games, handicrafts for sale, and lots of live music by top performers, Lobsterfest in Placencia is a great way to kick off the summer.
Nature Tours
Summer in Belize falls during the “low” season, meaning visitors can enjoy great rates on some of the top tours in the country. Belize is a natural wonderland where visitors can explore places like the Cockscomb Basin Nature Preserve (home to some of the last big cats in Central America, including jaguars), visit one of the seven different Important Bird Areas managed by the Audobon Society, or take a boat ride up the eponymous Monkey River to learn more about local flora and fauna.
The Ancient Maya
For thousands of years, the ancient Maya built a series of impressive cities carved out of the jungle. Today, Belize is home to more ancient Maya ruins than anywhere else, including the enormous Xunantunich (which, during its heyday, was bigger than any modern city in Belize), Altun Ha, and Lubantuun where the bloody remains of Maya resistance against the Spanish can still be seen.
Other exciting Maya activities to enjoy during the summer include exploring sacred caves like Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM), where more than a dozen skeletons, including those of young children, lie where they fell after being sacrificed to the gods more than 1,000 years ago.
Visit Placencia
Measuring 16 miles from north to south, the Placencia Peninsula is a leading eco-tourism destination in Belize. Located close to both the offshore islands of the Belize Barrier Reef as well as the top destinations on the mainland, Placencia has resorts, hotels, and boutique inns that are perfect for an unforgettable summer vacation in Belize.
