Placencia Belize Airport – What You Need to Know

Placencia Belize Airport - What You Need to Know

Strictly speaking, Placencia’s airport is an airstrip. Located just three miles (five kilometers) from Placencia Village at the southern end of the peninsula, the Placencia Airport (code: PLJ) receives several flights from Tropic Air and Maya Island every day from other airports across Belize.

Flying to Placencia has become a popular option for travelers who want to enjoy the golden sand beaches of the peninsula without having to make the long overland drive down from Belize City. The airport has a paved runway that is well-maintained, but it is too short to land large aircraft flying in from international destinations. The flying time from Belize City to Placencia is around 45 minutes. Flying time from other locations such as Punta Gorda or Dangriga is around 20 minutes in the air.

Maya Island Air operates 12 flights a day to Placencia from the Belize International Airport (code: BZE) and eight flights a day to Placencia from the Belize Municipal Airport (code: TZA). Maya Island Air also operates two flights a day to Placencia from Punta Gorda (code: PND) and seven flights per day from Dangriga (code: DGA). Tropic Air, the other domestic airline in Belize, operates a similar schedule with connections to/from the same airports in Belize.

Placencia is a narrow (less than one mile) peninsula that is around 16 miles (26 kilometers) long. For much of Belize’s history, the peninsula was home to small communities of fishermen but has now become one of the more popular tourist destinations in the country. The waters off Placencia are still home to a rich abundance of fish, beautiful beaches, laid-back Caribbean pace of life, and proximity to the reef have made Placencia a great base of operations to enjoy all that the land and sea have to offer in Belize.
