Belize Turns 43: Get Ready to Celebrate All September Long!

As many people in North America head back to school or work in September, Belize will be enjoying one of its most exciting and action-packed months. The entire period of September is often referred to as the September Celebrations because two very important patriotic holidays are held within 11 days of one another.

September 10 is sometimes called National Day in Belize, but it is more widely known as the Battle of St. George’s Caye Day. More than 200 years ago, a plucky band of loggers with assistance from the British Caribbean fleet managed to successfully fend off an assault by the Spanish Navy in the waters near the island of St. George’s Caye. As a result of that victory, Belize became the only British colony in Central America and thus the only English-speaking nation found today in the region.

Belize Festivals

The parties, parades, and dancing continues in Belize throughout the month, culminating in all the festivities of Independence Day. Belize gained independence from Great Britain on September 21, 1981, and every year, the occasion is heralded with recitations of patriotic poetry, performances of patriotic songs, parades, games, fairs, music concerts, and, of course, a ton of fireworks.

Although the festivities are concentrated in the larger cities, just about every town in Belize holds a fair or parade in September. The towns are hung with red, white, and blue bunting (the national colors), and many locations hold a Carnaval complete with elaborate costumes, parades, and dancing in the street.

September in Belize

Fortunately for Belize, September is a time of excellent weather and when many of the country’s most beautiful flowers bloom. That plus all of the patriotic holidays brings home thousands of Belizeans who work overseas, making September a great time to experience local flavor. September is also a great time to enjoy other exciting outdoor events like visiting an ancient Maya site, hiking through a national park, or visiting the majestic offshore islands on the reef.
