Anglers fishing in Robinson Point and Riversdale Village reeled in several of these unique sharks, which scientists have now identified as Sphyrna alleni, commonly known as the shovelbill shark.
This new species, which inhabits coastal waters and coral reefs, adds to Belize’s already diverse marine ecosystem. The shovelbill shark is relatively small, reaching about 3 feet 4 inches in length, and is easily identified by its “shovel-shaped” head and sharp teeth. Though new to science, these sharks are often caught by anglers, which makes them a potentially threatened species.
