Do Not Miss This Year’s Battle of the Drums in Punta Gorda
The town of Punta Gorda is gearing up for the Annual Battle of the Drums and Food and Fete Festival. This three-day, two-night festival is a celebration of Garifuna music and food heritage with dozens of top drumming groups competing for the grand prize while local chefs compete in the Taste of Garifuna cooking competition.
The party lasts through the night during the festival, beginning at 8:00 PM on November 16, 2018, at the Toledo Community College (TCC) in Punta Gorda and continuing until 3:00 AM. Throughout the night, chefs will be preparing a wide variety of Garifuna dishes, including hudut (a coconut fish stew), cassava bread, cassava pudding, and tapou (a soup made with root vegetables, green bananas, and fish).
The second night of the festival begins at 7:30 PM at the TCC and, again, will continue throughout the night with lots of high-energy drumming, dancing, singing, and delicious food. The winners of the Battle of the Drums will be announced at 6:00 AM on the morning of November 18, 2018.
