I could not rate this beach front horseback riding experience higher! Jimmy is the BEST tour guide, so knowledgeable and kind, stopping to give us local fruit whenever he spotted some. The horses were tame and super smart, not at all rattled when we passed a car or dog. We rode along the beach and into the water (since it’s August the Sargassum kept us from riding along the beach the entire time but that’s just the season!). It was my first time riding, but Jimmy made it so easy - just a totally unique, fun, and educational excursion in Placencia! My girlfriend and I had never ridden a horse before they had extremely well trained horses that did no spook and were easy to control. Jimmy told us all about the history of Belize and we tried a variety of fruit fresh off the tree. I highly recommend this tour!! I’m so happy we booked this tour and has Ian as our guide, as I think it was the highlight of our week in Belize!! We did the Tiger Fern Trail and waterfalls and I have never seen something so special in my life, incredible views and experience all around. Ian was a fantastic guide: super knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. He was cool with us changing our itinerary last minute, and let us do one of the more strenuous hikes in lieu of rafting. He was hilarious and took us to super cool spots and arranged a fanatic lunch. Barefoot Services was super accommodating for our travel arrangements, and let us book a full-day tour the day before. They reached out to us personally to make sure they were picking us up from the right spot and were very responsive via email. We were also able to make last minute changes to the reservation over phone and email. Samos ConsultingJuly 10, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Such a beautiful time spent riding on the beach with these mystical animals. I felt safe and was guided by the professional guides at barefoot. They were on time and very informative. I can’t wait to be back to explore with the other tours that offer. Lynn DefineJune 30, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We were lucky to have Jimmy as our driver from Belize City to Placencia, and he made our first experience in Belize truly unforgettable. He picked us up from the airport right on time, and the two-hour drive flew by thanks to his engaging stories and incredible knowledge of Belizean history and culture. Along the way, Jimmy stopped to treat us to fresh coconut water and fruit, a thoughtful gesture that really added to the experience. His warm demeanor, deep love for his country, and genuine hospitality left a lasting impression on us. Jimmy didn’t just get us to our destination—he introduced us to the heart of Belize. We couldn’t have asked for a better welcome. Highly recommend! Mark LaHayeJune 24, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Jimmy was such a delight. We experienced a great mix of nature and beach, learning about the people, food, and culture of Belize along the way. Every excursion and transfer was seamless and Barefoot was available whenever we had questions. We highly recommend Barefoot! We learned so much about Belize. Yaneri talked almost non-stop and everything was so interesting. Yaneri, THANK YOU for sharing your love for your country. Your passion was contagious :). Please note that it doesn't make much sense to visit Xunantunich without a guide. You NEED a guide to explain what it was to be Mayan at the time and Yaneri did that so well! I could go on and on. I miss Belize and if I ever go back, Barefood Services is the only Tour Services I would contact, because, being true locals, they know what they are talking about! (Under: happy tourists!) Julie NormanJune 16, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I HIGHLY recommend Barefoot Services whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with multiple times. From shuttle service and golf cart rental to tours (horseback riding and jungle) myself and my clients were delighted with them. Meg is always eager to help and made our trips extra special.
No, not if you’re a citizen of the United States, Canada, the European Union, CARICOM nations, and several other countries. You will, however, need a valid passport with at least six months left before it expires.
Tipping is always appreciated for concierge services and at restaurants. Tipping 10% is customary for good service while 15-20% is normal for exceptional service.
All of the finer hotels, resorts, and lodges will offer high-speed, wireless internet. Smaller, boutique hotels and offshore locations may only offer Wi-Fi in common areas. While internet access is less prevalent in rural areas, most visitors come to Belize to get away from the hectic demands of modern life and to enjoy the unspoiled, natural landscape and wildlife.
If you have an unlocked smartphone that uses SIM cards, you can purchase a pre-paid SIM card from one of the two Belizean carriers: Digicell and Smart. Most visitors, however, prefer to rely on wireless internet hotspots or just leaving their phone in their suitcase to focus on relaxing and enjoying their vacation.
Belize uses the same voltage and plugs as the United States and Canada, so you will not need a power adaptor unless you’re coming from Asia or Europe.
Generally, the bathrooms in Belize use the same western-style flushing toilets as you’d find anywhere in North America. However, in some rural areas, outhouse style bathrooms are all that is available.
Although tap water in Belize is safe for showering, drinking it may disturb foreign visitors. All visitors are recommended to solely drink bottled water which is widely available.
All finer establishments will accept credit cards, particularly Visa and MasterCard with less coverage for Discover. Cash, however, is universally accepted, and American dollars are gladly accepted everywhere in the country. The American dollar is permanently pegged to the Belize dollar at 2:1, making it easy to understand prices.
The larger cities will have ATMs, but these may charge withdrawal fees. To find out if your card will work in Belize, it is recommended that you check with your home bank.
Travel insurance is always recommended in case something unforeseen occurs.
