Getting From Harvest Caye to Placencia Village, Belize

Harvest Caye to Placencia BelizeIf you’re a Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) passenger, and your ship is docking in Belize, then you’ll be arriving at the island of Harvest Caye just a few miles offshore from the mainland. In Belize, all islands are called “cayes,” which is pronounced “keys.”

The good news is that it’s really easy to get to the mainland and all of the attractions and sights of Belize from Harvest Caye. In 2013, the government of Belize constructed a 275-foot long concrete pier in Placencia, and there are multiple daily ferries connecting Harvest Caye to the Placencia Peninsula. Tickets are sold onboard the NCL cruise ship, so booking ferry ticket is required.  Booking in advance and early is highly recommended, as there is a maximum number of  NCL passengers allowed to visit Placencia per day.

The Placencia Peninsula is often called the “island you can drive to” because of its white sandy beaches along the Caribbean coast and because this half-mile-wide strip of land is separated from the rest of Belize by a large, mangrove-lined lagoon teeming with exotic bird and plant life.

Once in Placencia, cruise ship passengers can tour Placencia Village, a small community of only around 1,000 people but a proud holder of an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the smallest main “street” in the world. In actuality, Placencia Village’s central thoroughfare is a pedestrian-only sidewalk measuring just four feet across and lined with colorful murals, boutique eateries, beachside bars, cozy cafes, and dive shops.

The unique geography of the Placencia Peninsula means that cars are generally off-limits. As such, most visitors prefer to get around by golf cart or dirt bike. Golf carts can be operated by all adult visitors, while only those with valid motorcycle licenses in their home country can operate two-wheeled powered vehicles like motorcycles and dirt bikes.

Placencia is perfectly situated for explorations of the natural attractions of Belize, including activities like swimming in the pool at the base of a jungle waterfall (a great way to cool off on a hot day!), floating down a lazy river with an inflatable inner tube, zip lining from tree to tree in the middle of the rainforest, and snorkeling and scuba diving on the reef.

If you’re coming to Harvest Caye and Placencia, you can rely on Barefoot Rentals and Services for all of your travel needs. Barefoot has a full fleet of cars, SUVs, golf carts, and dirt bikes for rent and regularly organizes adventure tours to all of the top attractions in the country.
