Celebrate Belize’s Independence Day This Month!

Often known locally as “Patriotic Month,” September is one of the best times to visit Belize.

The celebrations begin on September 10 with The Battle of St. George’s Caye Day which commemorates the historic 1798 naval battle between a large Spanish fleet and a rugged band of local English inhabitants that led to Belize becoming the only British colony in Central America.

The celebrations continue on through September 21, Independence Day, when Belizeans all across the country emblazon themselves in red, white, and blue (the national colors), sing patriotic songs, and enjoy street parades, games, and fireworks.

Belize became a fully sovereign nation on September 21, 1981, and each year, the National Celebrations Commission chooses a specific theme for Independence Day. In 2017, the Independence Day theme is “Belize: Confronting Challenges! Celebrating Triumphs! Renewing our Resolve!” After carefully assessing dozens of entries, this theme was chosen as a way to both honor the country’s rich history as well as encourage its citizens to continue to move together towards a better and brighter future.

Because of all of the national festivities, many Belizeans working overseas return home to join friends and family, making September one of the best times to meet locals. As flowering plants bloom, the landscape is a marvelous wonder to explore, making Independence Day and the entire month of September a great time to visit the jungle, trek through the rainforest, tour an animal sanctuary, or explore ancient Maya ruins like Xunantunich, Altun Ha, or Cahal Pech.

The warm weather in September means it’s also a great time to visit one of the offshore islands, enjoying world-class activities like sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving or fishing on the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the second-largest barrier reef in the world.

As the bells peal out joyously on September 21 to honor Independence Day, the streets of every village, town and city come alive with the sound of songs, music, laughter, and the unmistakable rhythms of drums as people take to the street to enjoy parades and dancing. Everyone is in a great mood, and there are fun games and activities for visitors of all ages.
